CAC FEEDBACK FOR 2008-2009 INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR
In response to a memo
sent to all campus Principals, the Bowie CAC was required to choose
between two draft proposals for the 2008-09 Instructional Calendar. The
only difference between the two draft calendars was as follows:
The CAC unanimously voted for Draft 1.
A brief background of the process used to develop the academic calendar proposals was provided to the CAC for their consideration prior to providing the feedback on the calendar. This included several documents, of which the highlights are listed below:
The parents and AISD staff members of the 2008-09 Calendar Task Force offer the following reflective questions and answers to provide the reasoning and values that were pivotal in the development of the academic calendar recommendations.
1. What is the process for creating the calendar? Who makes the final decision?
2. Why is school starting so late in 2008-09?
3. Why does school end so late?
4. How are the bad weather make-up days chosen?
5. If staff development days were instructional days, could school end earlier?
6. Why not group all of the staff development days at the beginning and/or the end of the school year to shorten the year for students?
7. Why do we have Labor Day off after just one week of school?
8. Why don’t we have a holiday on Veteran’s Day?
9. Why does the first semester end at Winter Break?
10. Why is the January staff development/preparation day on the 5th in Draft 1and on the 16th in Draft 2?
In addition there were several legal requirements mandated by state law and district considerations that were used to create the draft calendars. Answers to the above questions and an overview of the requirements applicable to the development of the calendar can be found here.
