STAAR Information
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As you know from our ongoing communications, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) end-of-course (EOC) assessments are replacing the four exit-level TAKS (Texas Assessments of Knowledge and Skills) exams as the state-mandated assessments for present 9th grade students to graduate. Our students, teachers, and staff have been working hard all year to prepare for these new, more rigorous tests.
Under the STAAR program students who entered grade 9 for the first time in 2011-12 will take the STAAR EOC exams this spring. Students currently enrolled in grade 10 or higher will continue to take TAKS and graduate under the requirements of the TAKS program. Eventually, the state will phase out the TAKS in high school, and all students will graduate under the new STAAR EOC requirements.
In addition to serving as assessment requirements for graduation, state law also requires that student performance on the new EOC assessments count for 15 percent of the student's grade in the corresponding course. The new law stipulates the 15 percent requirement it states that school districts are responsible for developing their own policies to meet this requirement, which is why I am writing to you today.
The District is asking for your help in selecting a methodology for factoring EOC assessment results into a student's final course grade. Currently, there are four options under consideration. Information regarding each option is available on the STAAR AISD website at http://www.austinisd.org/staar. The District is seeking input from parents on these options via a quick survey. Starting Monday, January 30, you can go online to http://www.austinisd.org/staar to give input, or respond to a telephone survey that will be conducted the week of January 30.
Bowie High School will be hosting a community meeting for all 9th grade parents to gain input on the conversion options. You are invited to attend this community meeting on Wednesday, February 1st at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria. There will be a brief presentation to explain the options and also a time for questions and discussion. Austin ISD is committed to choosing a conversion methodology that serves the best interest of students while complying with the law, and will strongly consider any feedback provided by parents. Please join us for this event.
Sincerely,
Steve Kane
