Bowie Blast, week of May 24
Fast Riders - The Bowie Mountain Bike Team…
  • finished out the 2015 season with improved results over last year.

  • With 22 high schools competing in the 2015 season, Bowie finished 7th overall.

  • Varsity Boys- Chad Bobbitt finished 5th

  • JV Girls- Cristina Cepeda finished 8th

  • Sophomore Girls- Nina Tinsley finished 7th

  • Freshman Boys- Mathew Lewis finished 6th and Conner Chatham finished 9th

Write On…

  • Sophomore Emma Lopez received a medal for 6th place for her essay at The Barbara Jordan African American Historical Essay Contest & the Texas Latino History Essay Contest. About 1,000 essays were submitted.

 

Meet of Champions Steeple Chase winner…

  • Marissa Flournoy placed 1st in the Steeple Chase in the Meet of Champions at Baylor. Her time now ranks 13th nationally!

Bowie Community Saves Lives…

  • The American Red Cross was on the Bowie campus this last week and collected 81 pints of blood from the 97 people who donated.

  • Each pint has the potential to save 3 lives, so together the Bowie Community helped save 243 lives in one day through this blood drive.

A Super Star....The Man Around Campus.....:
  • Our very own Nick Weismantel was selected as THE CLASSIFIED STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR at the AISD District's Employee's Appreciation Ceremony.

  • Mr. Weismantel works very hard at making sure things work at our school- everything from setting up the computers for testing, making improvements to our campus, to keeping track of the Bowie website and calendar... And a whole lot more of behind the scenes action.

Track & Field State Meet Qualifier....:

  • Sophomore Jackson Gail cleared a new school and AISD record of 15'6" in the pole vault.

  • Jackson finished in a tie for 4th place & was Bowie's 1st state qualifier in several years.

Baseball....Bi-District Champions.....:

  • Joe Davis & Kyle Gray are named the District Co-MVP players of the year. Chris Logan & Tanner Engelhardt are 1st Team All District; Honorable Mention was awarded to Thomas Varner, Travis Folmar & Coleman Kvapil.

  • Academic All District went to Bradley Dorer, Tanner Engelhardt, Mario Rivera, Roy Ramirez, Dusty Torres, Noah Walker, Daniel Rives, Brendan Warblow, Joe Davis, Travis Folmar, Emma Amsbury & Emily Gonzales.

JROTC....Take Pride for the Year.....:
  • JROTC was awarded the Outstanding Organization Award (OOA) for AY 2014-2015 by the Air Force and represents the best of the 889 AFJROTC units worldwide!

  • The Marksmanship Team competed at the Air Force Championships in Anniston, Alabama and finished 18th overall in our first year at this competition. We were one of 28 teams to qualify to attend out of more than 280 teams.

  • The Orienteering Team has won the Traveling Compass award for two of the last three years. This award recognizes the team that has acquired the greatest number of points for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Club’s numerous area events.

  • The Drill Team capped off their year at the Hal Aaron Invitational Drill Competition by placing 2nd in the “Unarmed Exhibition” and 3rd in both “Mixed Color Guard” and “Rifle Exhibition.”

  • The Kitty Hawk Air Society organized and accomplished 1,425 Community Service hours this year.

  • The Rocketry Team placed in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd overall in 5/7 Central Texas competitions throughout the year

  • JROTC UAV Club had the opportunity to represent the school at the South by Southwest conference. The Cyber Patriot Team, which deals in cyber security issues, made the Gold Round and missed the National Competition by only 8 spots.

  • These accolades recognize the personal growth and accomplishments of the cadets, contributions of the instructors as mentors, and the support of the school and local community.

Bowie Ranks in the Top 10% of Schools in Texas....:
  • US News & World Report ranked 1,869 high schools in Texas and placed Bowie HS at #117.

  • Placing in top 10% there are 7 AISD schools: LASA, Ann Richards, McCallum, Anderson, Bowie, Austin and Akins. Click on U.S.News for more information if you wish to check out the details

Debate UIL....Latino.....:

  • Students were encouraged in Debate 1 classes to enter the UIL Latino History or African American History Essay Contest- this statewide contest receives over 600 entries.

  • We are excited that sophomore, Emma Lopez, has been chosen as a state finalist and now she is open for TILF scholarships. Congratulations Emma

2015 Grads Accepted to.....Major Universities:
  • Congratulations to our Bowie Senior Class of 2015 that have been accepted to: Stanford, Georgetown, Brown, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), John Hopkins, Peabody Institute, Pepperdine, Cornell, the Military Academies, all of the colleges across Texas and many others in surrounding states. 

  • Thank you Veronica Castillo for all of the hard work and dedication in the College & Career Center on behalf of our Bowie students. Bringing colleges and Universities from all over the country to Bowie to meet with our students is an amazing and helpful service!

  • The Bowie PTSA is excited to announce this year's Senior Scholarship Recipients- John Morris, Natalia Rafiq, Klara Baker & Taylor Lewis.

  • What a great year for Bowie Tennis:

    • The doubles team of Mariya Shkolnaya & Jolie Francis qualified for the Regional Tournament as well as Jackson Cobb in singles. Both teams advanced to the semi-final round of the Waco Tournament where they lost very tough matches.

    • The award, Capital Area Tennis Association Female Player of the Year was given to Mariya Shkolnaya and Head Tennis Coach, James Dammann was awarded the Capital Area Tennis Association High School Coach of the Year- Congratulations!

    • Five of our tennis players are named to the All District Team- Jackson Cobb, Mariya Shkolnaya, Jolie Francis, Jamie Dammann & Christian Smith.

  • Vision & Voice

    • Two of our talented Bowie poets won the district's Vision & Voice poetry contest this year. They will be filmed reading their poetry on KLRU and their poetry will be exhibited on a poster along with artwork from Austin Community College Students. 

    • Junior Samantha Hunter & Senior Megan Winfrey. 

  • Congratulations to the Bowie PTSA for being named a finalist for PTA of the Year! AISD honored their best and brightest last week at a District wide dinner and our Bowie PTSA was one of about 5 PTA finalists out of over 140 AISD PTAs.

  • Forensics Take Top Spots for National Tournament

    • The entire team took the Top Speech Team Award for the 2nd year in a row.

    • It is the 2nd year that Bowie has taken Dynamic Interpretation National spots. The following students will be competing this summer against students from public and private schools across the country: Congressional Debate- Ethan Roberts & Caleb Newton, Dramatic Interpretation- David Garza & Jaime Godwin, Humorous Interpretation- Miguel Lozano & Jackson Walker, Duo Interpretation- Halen Wilson & Brooklyn Boreing

    • Additional Finalists include: Vincente Villarreal, Tanner Berg, Miguel Lozano, Jonah Foster, Jake Anderson & Grace Widner

  • Bowie Has One of The Top Scholastic Open Guards in The Country

    • Our Color Guard just returned from the Winter Guard International World Championship in Dayton, Ohio and they were amazing! In the Prelims, they won their round, in the Semis, they were 4th overall, winning movement caption and in the Finals they took 4th Place with a very high score of 92.15.

  • Region 18 UIL Concert & Sight-reading Contest

    • The Bowie Choirs competed at the Region 18 UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest and all four choirs came home with Sweepstakes Awards for earning superior ratings in both stage performance and sight-singing.

    • The combined Philharmonic and Sinfonietta Orchestras gave a great performance and received 1st Division Ratings from all 6 judges. They were one of the few non-varsity groups to get straight 1st Divisions!

  • Bowie Journalism Rocks It

    • The UIL/ILPC Journalism Conference awarded the school paper- The Lone Star Dispatch and the Yearbook Silver Stars, meaning they both placed in the top 3% of publications around the state. This is the first time in 20 years that both publications have won the award. This puts Bowie in the spotlight around the state for their newspaper and yearbook!

    • Newspaper Staff- Maryam Hussain, earned  Tops in Texas award in political cartooning.

    • The two publications brought home 41 other awards for individual achievements. The attachment has the complete list of awards the Journalism Department has won this year.

  • Bowie Swept... 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Region 13 Citizen Bee, mastering American History and Constitutional Issues.

    • 1st Place- Morgan Frisby

    • 2nd Place- Anna Bowers

    • 3rd Place- Kylie Dugan

Bowie Blast, week of April 20

 

  • The Varsity Color Guard wins the 2015 State Championship! The Open Team was able to continue on to compete at the 2015 Winter Guard International World Championships ranked 3rd in the country.

  • Bowie swept 1st Place- Morgan Frisby, 2nd Place- Anna Bowers & 3rd Place- Kylie Dugan in the Region 13 Citizen Blue, which involves American History & the United States Constitution. Morgan will compete in the state-wide competition at the Texas Capitol.

  • Out of 26 schools, the Bowie Fine Arts Department musical, Evita, was awarded at the Greater Austin High School Musical Theatre Awards- Best Orchestra (for the 2nd year in a row), Best Musical Direction & Best Musical.

  • Bowie-Austin FFA's Entomology Team placed 2nd in the Lone Star District, 5th in Area VII and qualified for State. Congratulations to Gunnar Hooks, Samantha Robarts, Thomas Sanders, and Aspen Wills.

  • From the Boy's District Track Meet- The Varsity Team finished 3rd, Junior Varsity took 1st and the Freshmen Team 2nd. The following athletes qualified to the Area Meet:

    • Regan Shaw- High Jump & 110 Hurdles; Jackson Gall- Polevault; Cole Evans- Polevault; Seth Gholston- 400; Ben Setterquist- 200; Caden Donahue- High Jump & Triple Jump; Josh Wainwright- Long Jump

    • 4x100 Relay Team- Steve Johnson, Josh Wainwright, Q Laracuente & Seth Gholston

    • 4x200 Relay- Steve Johnson, Ben Setterquist, Q Laracuente & Ja'Ques Dixon

    • 4x400 Relay- Seth Ghoulston, Jackson Gall, Q Laracuente, Ben Setterquist, Ja'Ques Dixon & Patrick Moran

  • The UIL Academic Team competed in a state-wide online virtual tournament. Throughout the semester our students competed against other top academic teams from every corner of the state. Here are Bowie's top finishers!

    • Top Team Biology- Morgan Frisby- 1st Place Senior; Angela Kang- 2nd Place Junior 6A Biology

    • Current Issues & Events- Caleb Newton- 2nd Place Sophomore 6A; Sam Arce- 2nd Place Senior 6A

    • Chemistry- Olivia Roberts- 3rd Place Sophomore 6A

    • Literary Criticism- Jack Guy- 3rd Place Senior 6A

    • Biology - Travis David - 3rd Place Senior 6A

Bowie Blast, week of April 13

 

  • A very special shout out goes to the Girls’ Varsity Track Team for winning the District Championship. This is the first victory for the Dawgs since 2008! Our JV team took 2nd and the Freshman team placed 3rd.

  • Congratulations to our Bowie Silver Stars for all the numerous awards they received at Marching Auxiliaries Texas State Championship & American Dance & Drill Team Lone Star State Championship! For a complete list of the awards, please see the attachment.

Bowie Blast, week of April 6

 

  • Austin Monthly Magazine ranked James Bowie High School at number 7 out of Central Texas high schools and mentions our expansive roster of AP courses and courses in culinary arts, hospitality, veterinary science and ROTC as well as our award-winning band.

  • The magazine also ranked the 40 best High Schools in Central Texas (data from the 2012-2013 school year).  Six of AISD’s seventeen high schools made the rankings.  They are listed as follows: LASA (1), Bowie (7), Anderson (14), Austin (15), McCallum (20), Akins (38).   • The 2015 Texas Color Guard Circuit Scholastic JV Champions. This is the 2nd consecutive state championship win!

  • Congratulations to Bowie Girls’ Basketball Coach, Vicki Benson, for being selected Central Texas Coach of the Year by the Austin-American Statesman's sport staff.

  • All participating Bowie students at UIL One Act Play and UIL Academic Events competed for district championship and regional advancement.

    • The One Act Play advanced to the next level of competition. Individual awards went to: ~ Brooklyn Boreing- All Star Cast ~ Lily Howard- Honorable Mention- All Star Cast ~ Katy Jacobs- All Star Cast ~ Noah Steele- Honorable Mention- All Star Cast ~ Catie Tijerina- Outstanding Technician

    • The following students advance to the Regional Qualifiers for UIL Academics: Prose Interpretation: 1st Place District Champion- Miguel Lozano; 2nd Place- Jake Anderson; 3rd Place- Jaime Godwin

    • Mathematics: Team Champions are Alec Gorden, Nathan Olsen, Eugene Choi. 2nd Place- Alec Gorden; 3rd Place- Nathan Olsen
