STAAR Information: James Bowie High School

Beginning in the spring of 2012, State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) assessments will be replacing the four exit-level TAKS (Texas Assessments of Knowledge and Skills) exams, as the state mandated assessments that a student must pass in order to graduate. The STAAR EOC (end-of-course) exams will test students for college readiness and Performance Labels that indicate a student's mastery of the course's standards.

Students that enter Grade 9 for the first time in 2011-12, will take the STAAR EOC exams in the spring of 2012. Those students currently enrolled in grades 10 through 12 will continue to take TAKS until the exam is phased out for the grade level and school year.

At the high school level, there are 12 EOC assessments required in the four foundation curriculum content areas of English, math, science and social studies. Unlike the TAKS test, STAAR will be timed giving students four (4) hours to complete each exam. Each assessment will also count for 15% of the student's grade in the corresponding course.

As we adapt to the new testing system, it is important to remember that our most basic, yet important, task has not changed – to provide students a high quality, comprehensive educational experience which allows all students to thrive. That said, for the past year, our district, staff and administrators have been working very hard to prepare our students for achievement on the more rigorous tests, and we will continue to do so.

In light of the new policy changes, we anticipate many questions from students and parents. In order to help you better understand the new system and how we can work together to ensure you academic achievement for your child, the district has provided some helpful links and resources for parents located on the AISD STAAR homepage. To access the information on the state-mandated change, the testing schedule, FAQ's and links to resources, including sample assessment questions please visit: www.AustinISD.org/STAAR.

AISD is committed to our students and, as a result, will continue to keep our community fully informed of the implications of the STAAR EOC assessments. As we receive more information from our district leaders and TEA, we will continue to pass it on to you.

Bowie School Report Card

Below you will find a link to the State of Texas 2010-11 School Report Card for James Bowie High School. This is a report required by the Texas Legislature and prepared by the Texas Education Agency. It is to be sent to the parent or guardian of every child enrolled in the public schools. The report provides information concerning student performance as well as information concerning expenditures, average class size, and student/teacher ratios.

State law requires that the information be provided for the state, the district, the school, and a group of schools similar to our school. Where possible, the information must be reported by race/ethnicity and socio-economic status of the students and must include at least two years of results.
