Bowie Blast -- Week of April 11

Choir: Several Bowie High Choir students competed in the Region 18 UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest. 7 students earned a rating of a 1 for superior performance, and 2 students will be advancing to the State-Level contest later this semester. They include: (* Indicates going to state) *Mason Cottam, *Tennyson Tole, Isabel Cherukuri, Ashira Fronk, Maddie Tapia, Tiffany Yin and Ava Escobar.


Baseball: The varsity baseball team beat DelValle 4-2. Patrick Collopy and Ryan Corbett combined to pitch a 4 hitter. The Dawgs also beat LASA 10-0. Four pitchers, Danny Rodriguez, Walter Bodden, Peyton Purcell and Anthony Simmons worked together to no- hit LASA. Dylan Godina and Thanio Bright had 2 hits each for the bulldogs.The team also prevailed over Westlake 1-0, after a strong pitching performance from Johnathan Eastin. He pitched a 2 hitter and struck out 14. Thanio Bright had 3 hits for the dawgs. Lastly, the varsity baseball team beat Westlake again Thursday night by a score of 6-2. Patrick Collopy threw 6 innings, striking out 7, only giving up 4 hits and 2 runs. Sean McCullough and Thanio Bright each had 2 hits and drove in runs for the bulldogs. Tyler Thomason and Brody Miller had RBI singles for the dawgs. Ryan Corbett threw 1 inning in relief and struck out 2.


Softball: A big congrats to Varsity on getting a HUGE district win in the books with their win over the previously undefeated Hays with a score of 6-3! JV dropped to Hays with a 2-13 final. Varsity also defeated Del Valle in their district match-up on April 8th, with a score of 14-3! Congrats to JV on their win as well with a score of 14-4!


UIL Academics: Bowie’s UIL Academic team competed in a virtual district tournament. With only a handful of our teams competing this year, the Bowie UIL Academic Team still preserved and claimed several individual and team championships and placed second overall in the district contest.

Newspaper: The Texas Association of Journalism announced the winners and runners-up for their annual Best of Texas individual awards. The Dispatch print edition and online paper earned 67 individual awards and 4 Best of the Best awards!! It was the second highest total number of winners in the competition from over 30 schools across the state this year. Best of the Best winners, which are special awards given to the best entries in 11 specific categories for the Dispatch were: Cade Spencer - Print News Portfolio - Best of the Best, Faith Lawrence - Print News Design - 1st runner up, Arushi Sharma - Online News Design - 2nd runner up, Staff - Online News Design - 1st runner up. Multiple Dispatch staff members won Best in Texas awards, too many to type here but seniors Cade Spencer and Faith Lawrence each won 12 individual awards, while Rea Gray picked up 9 to lead the Bulldogs. This was the best showing in the contest for the Dispatch since the contest's inception five years ago.


Girls Track: Congratulations to the following girls who advanced to the Area meet in their events: The 4 x 100 Relay won their race. The district champions are: Lyndee Lambert, Arianna Buduan, Brooke Pesses, and Abbey Smith. The 4 x 200 Relay placed 2nd. The girls on the relay were Lyndee Lambert, Ashley Salas, Brooke Pesses, and Abbey Smith. Lydia Standage placed 2nd in the high jump. Abbey Smith placed 2nd in the 200-meter dash. Katherine Kastl placed 2nd in the 100 hurdles. Abbey Smith placed 3rd in the triple jump. Ellie Dusterhoft placed 4th in the 100 hurdles. Ella McDonnell placed 4th in the pole vault. The 4 x 400 Relay finished 4th. Team members are Katherine Kastl, Melanie Stamm, Ashley Salas, and Brooke Pesses.


Boys Track: Bowie had a busy last week with 3 days of track meets. The following young men qualified for the Area Track meet next Friday 4/16: 4x100 Adrian Rodriguez, Griffin Crawley, Johnny Homsy, Dower Powell. 800: Zach Kehler, 100: Griffin Crawley, 4x200: Griffin Crawley, Tanner Galow, Adrian Rodriguez, Dower Powell, 400: Johnny Homsy, 4x400: Zach Kehler, Johnny Homsy, Tanner Galow, Adrian Rodriguez, Pole vault: Cash Peters and Shot put: Kyle Knudson.
