Bowie Blast -- Week of Nov. 29

Bowie Blast 11/29/2020

We are proud of our Bulldogs and encourage teachers and coaches to submit news to Mr. Robinson's office!

Yearbook

We have several recognitions for our Lone Star Yearbook Staff. Bowie received four national finalists from the National Scholastic Press Association for work published in the 2020 book. That's the most we've received in a single year and we're one of only a few yearbook staffs in the country to receive more than two finalists. Each category only has ten finalists from across the country. Here are our category finalists:

  • Design of the Year Yearbook Spread: Juniors Mia Breslford & Isabella Grahmann for the FFA spread (we're defending national champs in this category!)

  • Design of the Year Infographic: Seniors Ryan Kinney & Sadah Young for the Current Events spread

  • Photo of the Year Environmental Portrait: Senior Haley Drouin for harpist portrait

  • Design of the Year Portfolio: 2020 graduate & editor-in-chief Logan Dorsey (link to an article our publisher Balfour did about her)

We also competed in the Texas Association of Journalism Educators' Fall Fiesta virtual convention. We placed in every category we entered - a great showing to these editors who were awarded:

  • Superior in Beginning Yearbook Design - junior Taj James

  • Superior in Marketing - junior Mia Brelsford

  • Excellent in Advanced Yearbook Design - junior Cristina Canepa

  • Excellent in Yearbook Copy - senior Mariah Barsotti

  • Honorable Mention in Digital Photo "Gold" - senior Tiffany Ard

  • Honorable Mention Best of Show Big Yearbook - The Usual

Please congratulate these students. And as always, we couldn't do this without you - my students' work highlights your students' work.

Orchestra

TMEA All-State Orchestra Auditions took place over the past two weeks. Out of thousands of students who auditioned from all over the state of Texas, two students from the Bowie Orchestra ranked and won a spot in this year’s Texas All-State Orchestra: Grace Gum, violist, ranked 30th in the state, and won a spot in the Philharmonic Orchestra and Rauno Menese-Halmari, string bassist, ranked 14th in the state, and also won a spot in the Philharmonic Orchestra. If you see these students in-person, on Zoom, or in sports activities this week, please congratulate them on their hard work. This is an extremely rigorous audition process and a very difficult audition to win!

Newspaper

On Monday the Dispatch Online, located at https://thedispatchonline.net earned its third straight Distinguished Site Award from School Newspapers Online. Meeting the requirements is a time-consuming process where Co-Editors-in-Chief Shikha and Shruti Patel are required to submit for six different broad criteria called Badges. Each Badge has multiple requirements that the site must achieve, these include Site Excellence, Multimedia, Audience Engagement, Continuous Coverage, Story Page Excellence and Excellence in Writing. We were the 6th high school nationally to earn a Distinguished Site award this year.
